Vitamin D: Gene and Immune Regulator

In the field of functional medicine, vitamin D is regarded as one of the most important nutrients. It is not merely an assistant for "calcium supplementation" but also a key nutrient that regulates the immune system, maintains hormonal balance, supports energy metabolism, and promotes emotional stability. Unfortunately, most people are in a state of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency without even realizing it.

Vitamin D is actually a hormone that regulates over 2,000 genes in the human body, playing a crucial role in health. However, modern environmental and lifestyle factors mean that many people suffer from vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. To date, not a single one of my clients had optimal vitamin D levels when they first came to me, and a significant portion were severely deficient.

The lower limit of the reference range for vitamin D levels used in traditional healthcare systems is typically 30 ng/ml, and sometimes as low as 20 ng/ml. However, levels of 20–30 ng/ml are only sufficient for maintaining skeletal health and are inadequate for supporting other bodily systems, such as the immune, nervous, endocrine, and reproductive systems.

Functional medicine considers the optimal vitamin D level to be between 50–80 ng/ml, with some individuals requiring even higher levels. For my clients, I generally aim for levels of 70–80 ng/ml. For more information on vitamin D, click here.

🌤 Why is vitamin D so important?

- Immune Defender: Vitamin D helps the immune system identify and eliminate pathogens, reducing infections and chronic inflammation.

- Guardian of Bones and Teeth: Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, strengthening bones and reducing tooth sensitivity.

- Source of Energy and Muscle Strength: People deficient in vitamin D often experience fatigue and weakness. Supplementation can boost energy levels and enhance muscle strength.

- Mood Stabilizer: Low vitamin D levels are closely linked to anxiety and depression. Adequate vitamin D helps improve mood and focus.

- Barrier Against Chronic Diseases: Vitamin D levels are closely related to cardiometabolic health, blood sugar balance, and the risk of autoimmune diseases.

According to Dr. Michael Holick, a leading authority on vitamin D, if the general population were to maintain vitamin D levels of 50 ng/ml, the risk of the following diseases could be significantly reduced:

- Breast cancer by 50%

- Colorectal cancer by 67%

- Type 1 diabetes by 80%

- Type 2 diabetes by 50%

- Fractures by 50%

- Multiple sclerosis by 50%

- Kidney cancer by 67%

- Sudden heart attack in men by 50%

- Cesarean sections by 75%

In summary, maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to improve health in multiple aspects.

When your vitamin D levels are optimized, you may experience:

- Increased daytime energy and reduced fatigue

- Improved muscle strength and exercise endurance

- Reduced or eliminated tooth sensitivity

- Better sleep quality and more stable mood

- Fewer colds and infections

- Sharper focus and improved concentration

However, vitamin D supplementation is not as simple as just "taking vitamin D". A common clinical mistake is supplementing with vitamin D alone or only combining it with calcium, which can lead to kidney stones or cardiovascular complications. This is because the safe and effective utilization of vitamin D depends on a range of synergistic nutrients and metabolic conditions, including adequate levels of magnesium, zinc, vitamin K2, and others. It also requires consideration of medication use, dietary habits, and individual differences.

Therefore, scientific vitamin D management should be conducted under professional guidance, accompanied by regular serum level testing to avoid risks associated with deficiency or excess. Clinical experience in functional medicine suggests that maintaining vitamin D levels in the 70–80 ng/ml range is more conducive to achieving optimal immune regulation, bone health, and protection against chronic diseases.

Note: There are two testing options available: serum and blood spot. The serum test is performed at Labcorp and requires a standard blood draw (additional $10 draw fee). The blood spot test is a convenient at-home option, where you collect a few drops of blood yourself and mail the sample to the lab.
